Rekha Bhardwaj went to Hindu College in Delhi, following which she attended the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, School of Indian Classic music and dance. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music.

Her preliminary training on music was at home by none other than her older sister. After music school, she received training in Gharana singing under Pandit Amarnath.

In collaboration with Gulzar and ten years since its inception, her first album Ishqa Ishqa was released in 2002. A song in the album Raat Ki Jogan was conceived as early as 1994. The release won her massive accolades, allowing her to secure songs like Namak Ishq Ka for Omkara (2006).
